Filmed in Bach's 300th-anniversary year in 1985, this ambitious recording of the composer's St John Passion in Graz Cathedral features one of the most significant and pioneering Bach interpreters of the last half-century. Setting out with his Concentus Musicus WIen – founded in 1953 – to recapture the original and drama of Bach's work, Nikolaus Harnoncourt leads a performance of rare conviction and power, unusual in its use not just of a boys choir (the renowned Tölzer Knabenchor) but also for allotting the soprano and alto solos to members of the choir.
