Herbert von Karajan conducts this 1965 film version of Puccini's classic opera La Bohème, which represented three firsts: the first music film conducted by Karajan, the first opera film produced by Unitel and the first major film production by Franco Zeffirelli. Based on Zeffirelli's 1963 production at La Scala, Milan, the lavish film quickly achieved status as a classic of the genre, with the young Mirella Freni leading a superb cast of some of the finest Italian singers of the period.
