Leading turn of the 20th century music critic Louis Ehlert wrote of “heavenly naturalness” when reviewing Antonín Dvořák’s work, praise that is fitting also to the Berliner Philharmoniker’s 2016 performance at the Waldbühne with its entirely Czech programme. Playing in the open air, the setting helps to further evoke the images of natural landscapes conjured by the works, particularly Smetana’s Vltava, which paints a portrait of the graceful flow of the river. Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin also conducts two of Dvořák’s rarely performed pieces: the virtuoso and melodious Violin Concerto with the wonderful violinist Lisa Batiashvili and the spirited Sixth Symphony.
