Karajan conducts Brahms: Symphony No. 1

"Any fool can see that!" Brahms is supposed to have retorted when contemporaries pointed out the resemblance between his First Symphony and Beethoven's Ninth. Few symphonies wear their debt to Beethoven more proudly, and for Herbert von Karajan, Brahms sat with Beethoven and Bruckner at the summit of the Austro-German symphonic canon. He approached the First, in particular, with deep seriousness, and it was one of the cornerstones of his repertoire throughout his long career. This performance from 1987 finds him marshalling all the sonic power and tonal beauty of the Berlin Philharmonic: the culmination of a lifelong engagement with Brahms's symphonies.
