Standing between the tragedy of the Seventh Symphony and the epic drama of the Ninth, Dvořák's Eighth Symphony is one of the happiest moments in his entire symphonic cycle: music that positively glows with the sunshine, birdsong and lilting melodies of Dvorak's beloved Bohemian countryside. Outside of Prague itself, it's hard to imagine a great orchestra better suited to the warmth and freshness of Dvorak's music than the Vienna Philharmonic. Herbert von Karajan always cherished a special love for this symphony, and under his baton this performance from 1985 has both tenderness and a masterly, symphonic sense of purpose.
