Contemporaries noted that Herbert von Karajan seemed to have a special affection for Richard Strauss's Don Quixote – a tone poem unlike any other: part concerto, part musical joke, and part meditation on humanity in all its folly and idealism. Naturally, Karajan and his Berlin orchestra are dazzlingly virtuosic, finding endless colour and fun in Don Quixote's musical adventures. Strauss's herd of sheep has never sounded more poetic! But in choosing the young Antonio Meneses as cello soloist, Karajan adds a fresh, and uniquely touching dimension: a combination of youth and (huge) experience that gets right to the heart of this loveable work.
