Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata is a wonderful paradox – music of boundless imagination and life, conceived for an instrument that is now defunct! But in her Schubertiades, pianist Maria João Pires invites beloved musical friends to uncover the Schubert who lies far beneath his music’s melodious surface. Cellist Antonio Meneses plays the Sonata today; the centrepiece of an evening-long musical exploration from the Philharmonie de Paris that also involves the baritone Thomas Humphreys, pianist Thomas Enhco, and Pires herself. Expect Schubert songs and solo piano music, as well as improvisations inspired by this most poetic of musical minds. A truly special occasion.
