Pierre Boulez's reputation might have primarily been that of a strict modernist, yet his repertoire was extremely broad and all his interpretations characterized not only by precision and structural awareness, but also by elegance and an unparalleled ear for sonority. All this is in evidence in the Europakonzert from 2003, in which he conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker in orchestral works by Ravel, Bartók and Debussy, as well as Mozart's dramatic Piano Concerto No. 20. The setting is the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery near Lisbon, built in the 16th century. The soloist is Maria João Pires, a pianist born in the Portuguese capital and one of the most subtle and sensitive Mozartians of her generation.
