For the great Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires, the music of Franz Schubert is about “sharing, a kind of love, a purity”, and in her Schubertiades, she celebrates and explores that sense of chamber music as something shared. On this occasion at the Philharmonie de Paris, two of Schubert’s most personal mature works – the Death and the Maiden quartet and the late Piano Sonata D.960 - unlock a world of intimate poetry. They’re framed by songs from baritone Thomas Humphreys, a new homage to Schubert by Dai Fujikura, and a visual setting specially conceived to heighten and complement Schubert’s imaginative universe.
