Herbert von Karajan is best remembered for his recordings of major symphonic cycles and full-length operas, but his compilation discs of shorter classics were bestsellers in the 1970s and 1980s – combining the virtuoso flair of the Berliner Philharmoniker with the special authority that Karajan brought to everything he conducted. This concert from 1985 finds unexpected links between four overtures by Beethoven and Brahms, crowned by mighty, truly symphonic accounts of two of the greatest of all Romantic overtures – Brahms's Tragic Overture, and the stupendous Leonora No.3, composed by Beethoven for his opera Fidelio but withdrawn by him because it was simply too dramatic!
