The Berliner Philharmoniker's annual Silvesterkonzert is always a special occasion in Berlin. But in the later years of Herbert von Karajan's tenure as music director, it had a unique atmosphere, as Karajan took popular classics that are often regarded as mere "lollipops" and treated them to the full power of his artistry, as well as the unrivalled precision of his orchestra at its postwar peak. On New Year's Eve 1985 he opened in the forests of Weber's Der Freischütz and ended with a roof-raising Ravel Boléro. In between come favourites by Puccini, Leoncavallo and Liszt – but they've never sounded quite like this.
