Christian Thielemann's celebrated first audio-visual cycle of Bruckner's symphonies began with this performance of Symphony No. 7, which was simultaneously his first concert as the principal conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden – one of Germany's and the world's oldest and most distinguished orchestras. Bruckner's work – the only symphony to receive a triumphant premiere in his lifetime – includes in its Adagio a moving tribute to Wagner, who was idolized both by Bruckner and by Hugo Wolf, a selection of whose orchestrated songs, performed by the great Renée Fleming, complete the programme.
