Thielemann conducts Bruckner: Symphony No. 8

Bruckner himself saw his Symphony No. 8 as his greatest achievement and it was a huge blow when it was rejected by the conductor Hermann Levi (the first conductor of Wagner's Parsifal), who was bewildered by its huge form and creative daring. In its revised form, it has gone on to be accepted as one of the great symphonic masterpieces of the late 19th century, and a work of almost unparalleled cumulative power. And that is what comes through so clearly in this performance by Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden, filmed at the Semperoper Dresden – a truly memorable occasion captured for posterity.
