Every performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is a special occasion. But when the Chamber Orchestra of Europe came together with its long-time collaborator (and honorary member) Yannick Nézet-Séguin in Baden-Baden in Summer 2021 to perform a complete Beethoven symphony cycle, there was a definite sense of history being made. This was the COE’s first recorded Beethoven cycle since 1991, and the first ever to use the new Breitkopf & Härtel edition of the Ninth. The concert opened with the composer’s first symphony, before a world-class team of solo singers and the virtuoso chamber choir Accentus joined orchestra and conductor for a revelatory performance of his last, bringing the cycle to a thrilling close.
