Gavrilov plays Chopin: 4 Ballades

Andrei Gavrilov burst onto the scene in the late 1970s when he won the International Tchaikovsky competition but his early career in the West was held for several years in check by the KGB. Later he would establish himself as one of the most impressive pianists of his generation and, although he largely retired from performing in 1993, he still occasionally presented concerts, such as this from the Munich Klaviersommer in 1997 – where the power and conviction of his musical imagination still shines brightly in Chopin’s Four Ballades and three encores.
