In 2020, the Bayreuth Festival was unable to take place in its usual form due to the Corona crisis; nevertheless, music by Richard Wagner could still be heard in the city that is synonymous with the composer – even if the Festival Orchestra was able to perform only with a small lineup. Happily, with the Siegfried Idyll, a birthday gift to his second wife, Cosima, Wagner composed just the piece for such circumstances – a work of great intimacy and chamber-music transparency for small instrumental ensemble. Renowned Wagnerian Christian Thielemann conducts it here in a very special venue: the Wagner family's Bayreuth home, Villa Wahnfried.
