The Wiener Philharmoniker's concerts with Andris Nelsons are eagerly anticipated highlights of the international concert calendar; the conductor has been on the podium for their tradition-steeped New Year's Concert as well as a new cycle of Beethoven's symphonies released for the composer's anniversary. Now conductor and orchestra are devoting themselves to various works by Gustav Mahler in Vienna, on tour and at the Salzburg Festival. Here they present the Seventh Symphony, arguably the composer's most ambivalent – and modern – essay in the genre, memorable for the unusual orchestration of the second "Night Music" movement, a haunting scherzo, and a finale that is resplendent in ambiguous triumph.
