Daniel Barenboim & West-Eastern Divan Orchestra – Live in Geneva

Five years after its foundation by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra perform a programme built on two pillars of the repertory in Geneva's Victoria Hall. Barenboim himself is the soloist in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, a work of rare drama, beauty and – especially in the final movement – sparkling virtuosity. After it comes the rich melody and orchestral sumptuousness of Tchaikovsky's grandly Romantic Symphony No. 5. Two encores, meanwhile, serve up melancholy and then drama, concluding this impressive showcase of an ensemble bringing together young musicians of Arab and Israeli backgrounds to promote harmony in a climate of political instability.
