The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra was founded with the aim of promoting harmony between young Isreali and Palestinian musicians. In its first years, though, the prospect of actually performing in Palestine had seemed unthinkable – until, six years into its existence, and in the face of near insuperable political and practical hurdles, they performed together in Ramallah. With Daniel Barenboim on the podium and Mozart's collegial Sinfonia Concertante K. 297b and Beethoven's thrilling Symphony No. 5 on the programme, it proved an historic occasion.
