Karajan Memorial Concert – with Seiji Ozawa & Anne-Sophie Mutter

A “triumph of remembrance” was how Die Welt described this Berliner Philharmoniker concert in Vienna’s Musikverein. It marked the centenary of the birth of Herbert von Karajan, and both conductor and soloist – the late Seiji Ozawa, and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter – regarded Karajan as mentor and friend; but both are also commanding figures in their own right, and these are performances of consummate commitment and beauty. Mutter follows Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with her own personal tribute to Karajan, the Sarabande from Bach’s D minor Partita, before Ozawa unleashes the full expressive power of Karajan’s old orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” symphony. The breathless silence after the final note speaks louder than any words.
