The Salzburg Festival has long been an occasion where musical stars align to form wonderful new constellations; a Festival with an intense awareness of its own heritage. This concert from 2015 marked the 30th anniversary of Anne-Sophie Mutter's first Salzburg performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto under the baton of her great mentor Herbert von Karajan. Ricardo Muti conducts the Vienna Philharmonic here, but there's an unmistakable emotional current to Mutter's interpretation – and even more so in her encore, a towering account of Bach's D minor Sarabande, which she dedicated to Karajan's memory. Muti follows it with a luminous performance of Brahms's sunlit Second Symphony, played by the orchestra that premiered it back in 1877.
