Anne-Sophie Mutter & Lambert Orkis perform Brahms: The Violin Sonatas

Concert

Polling Abbey Library

Production Date: 02/12/2009
76 Min

Throughout her career, Anne-Sophie Mutter has forged a unique musical relationship with the pianist Lambert Orkis – a chamber music partnership in which two great artists speak with a single musical voice. And throughout that long partnership, Brahms's three violin sonatas – by turns tender, tormented and ardently romantic – have been a constant presence. In 2009, the pair committed their shared interpretation to disc: as Mutter put it, "the apple was ripe and simply had to be picked". With Brahms, of course, ripeness is all, and for this film of their sonata cycle, the pair chose the elegant but intimate baroque Bibliotheksaal at Polling Abbey in Bavaria – a ravishing visual counterpoint to these searching, heartfelt interpretations.

Soloists
Anne-Sophie Mutter (Violin), Lambert Orkis (Piano)
