"I've always loved chamber music, and love it more and more," says violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. "No other music has such intimacy, allows so much spontaneity and requires such quick reflexes." All those qualities are present in sparkling abundance in this performance of Mendelssohn's sweeping First Piano Trio – one of the touchstones of Romantic chamber music, and a work in which all three players need to share an absolute understanding. Cellist Lynn Harrell and pianist André Previn are two of Mutter's closest and oldest friends, and it shows; this is a true meeting of hearts and minds in the Vienna Musikverein's exquisite 300-seat Brahms-Saal. Previn and Mutter follow it with an ardent account of Mendelssohn's lyrical Violin Sonata.
