There's a special delight in hearing all five of Mozart's Violin Concertos as a sequence, as Mozart's teenage genius unfurls like a flower before our ears. And what better way to hear them than from the chamber orchestra of Mozart's own hometown, Salzburg, with Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist and director? This 2006 cycle – recorded in the Great Hall of Salzburg University, where Mozart himself performed – was a passion project for Mutter, conceived, she says, because Mozart's music "has made my spine tingle, and moved me to tears". But it takes an artist of Mutter's stature to find the full profundity beneath the graceful surface of these enchanting works, and the result is a meeting of two truly extraordinary musical minds.
