The 2014 Europakonzert fell in the 450th anniversary year of Shakespeare's birth – and what better pretext for Daniel Barenboim, a lifelong Anglophile, to direct a programme that celebrates a genius whose humanity transcends borders? The figure of Falstaff dominates the first half: comic, tragic, playful but always irrepressibly alive – whether in the wit and warmth of Nicolai's delightful overture, or the psychological depth of Elgar's rarely-played tone poem. And then, in the second half of this programme from the Philharmonie Berlin, it's the turn of another artist who crosses cultures: Tchaikovsky, in a sweeping performance of his mighty Fifth Symphony.
