One of the most exciting young stars in the piano world, Bruce Liu became an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist shortly after his victory at the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition in 2021. And here the Canadian-Chinese virtuoso presents Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 “Funeral March” at the heart of a varied recital from the Klavier-Festival Ruhr. Alongside the Chopin – a work at once impassioned, mournful and mercurial – he performs sonatas by Haydn, Beethoven and Prokofiev, as well as the Variations Op. 41 by maverick Ukrainian composer Nikolai Kapustin, who fused jazz and classical styles to thrilling effect.
