The annual New Year's Eve Gala Concert at the Berlin Philharmonie explores the theme of Love and Desire in the year 1998, for which no programme would be complete without songs from Mozart and Verdi. Led by Claudio Abbado, the Berliner Philharmoniker accompanies an impressive list of singers: Christine Schäfer and Simon Keenlyside, two of Mozart's best interpreters at the time; Argentinian tenor Marcelo Álvarez, who has been compared to a young Domingo; and the incomparable Mirella Freni, who was championed by Herbert von Karajan and brings the Gala to its climax with a performance of the letter scene from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin.
