Economou plays Liszt: Piano Sonata in B Minor

"Anyone who plays Liszt without nobility passes sentence on himself," said Alfred Brendel of the Liszt's mighty B minor Sonata – an accusation that could never be levelled at Nicolas Economou, the remarkable Greek-Cypriot pianist who astonished the world at the 1969 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and went on to win the esteem of fellow-pianists as varied as Martha Argerich and Chick Corea. This performance, recorded in the Kongressaal, Munich, is especially treasurable, dating as it does from 1983 – just over a decade before Economou's tragically early death in a car accident at the age of 40.
