Nicolas Economou was a pianist of extraordinary range and creativity, as comfortable duetting with a jazz legend like Chick Corea as he was in the high-romantic virtuoso repertoire with which he took the musical world by storm at the 1969 International Tchaikovsky Competition. So there's something specially compelling about hearing – and seeing – him perform Mozart; in this case, the beloved F major sonata K. 332, captured on the wing during a recital at the 1983 Klaviersommer in Economou's adopted home of Munich. It's a playful, delightfully intimate record of an artist whose death, aged 40, came heartbreakingly early.
