The superb – but tragically short-lived – Cypriot pianist Nicolas Economou was a regular guest at the Munich Klaviersommer, Friedrich Gulda’s groundbreaking Festival that sought common ground between the worlds of classical music and jazz. And a composer who also often tests the boundaries of conventional concert music is Rodion Shchedrin, whose concise Piano Sonata No. 1 of 1962 performed here: a work in which a playful first movement is pitted against a contemplative second movement and a fierce toccata finale, all dispatched with characteristic conviction and virtuosity by Economou.
