Rattle conducts Tippet, Turnage & Vaughan Williams—with John Scofield
London Symphony Orchestra
150 Min
Sir Simon Rattle conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in London's Barbican Centre in a programme of British music of the 20th and 21st centuries. The powerful Ritual Dances from Michael Tippett's mystical and mythical Midsummer Marriage features alongside Vaughan Williams's powerfully moving Symphony No.5. Between them comes the premiere of a new work by Mark-Anthony Turnage: a new guitar concerto commissioned to celebrate Rattle's 70th birthday and written for legendary jazz guitarist John Scofield, who premieres the work here. All in all, it's a programme that promises to showcase orchestra and conductor – and a star soloist – in a thrilling range of musical styles.
