Don Giovanni is synonymous with the Salzburg Festival, and Mozart and Da Ponte's tragi-comic tale of a great seducer and his doom is one of those operas that reveals new dimensions every time it's performed. Michael Hampe's handsome period production for the 1987 Salzburg Festival is gorgeous to look at, but even for Salzburg, the musical values are off the scale, with Samuel Ramey as Don Giovanni, Ferruccio Furlanetto as his valet Leporello and Júlia Várady (Donna Elvira), Anna Tomowa-Sintow (Donna Anna) and Kathleen Battle (Zerlina) completing an unrivalled all-star cast. Herbert von Karajan conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker and the result is the kind of performance you hear once in a lifetime – but captured forever.
