It was the composer's brother who suggested the name for Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony, and he told it like it is: "Pathétique" simply means "full of feeling". Amid all the myths and mysteries that surround Tchaikovsky's final masterpiece, one thing is beyond dispute: the glorious inspiration and uncompromising emotional honesty of this heartbreaking music. Both Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic had a special relationship with Tchaikovsky's symphonies (in the case of the orchestra, one that extends back to the composer's own lifetime), and this performance, given in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein in January 1984 glows with absolute emotional commitment.
