Herbert von Karajan recorded this cycle of Brahms's Four Symphonies live in the Berlin Philharmonie in 1973 when he was at the height of his powers – and over 15 years into his reign as principal conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker. The four works, all premiered within the space of a decade, represent one of Brahms's greatest achievements as a composer, from the breakthrough Symphony No. 1, decades in the planning, to the passionate Fourth, culminating in a powerful Passacaglia – a Baroque form built on a repeating bassline. To all four works, Karajan brings the concentration and musical singlemindedness that were his hallmarks in what remains an essential audio-visual document of his art.
