For Beethoven, his “Pastoral” Symphony was “more an expression of feeling than a painting”, but with its imitations of birdsong, and its rapturous vision of nature transfigured by the imagination, there’s no one way to hear this most open-hearted of symphonies. For an artist as generous and perceptive as Claudio Abbado, the “Pastoral” held a particular magic. This performance – given in Rome towards the end of Abbado’s transformative decade as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker – breathes a very special atmosphere. An orchestra and conductor who understood each other profoundly, finding fresh wonders in some of Beethoven’s loveliest music.
