Beethoven once proclaimed himself to be “the new Bacchus, pressing out glorious wine for humanity” – and he never came closer to realising that ideal than in his Seventh Symphony. A cosmic dance? Or just the greatest of all symphonists revelling in the sheer, uninhibited joy of sound and movement? Towards the end of his tenure as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Claudio Abbado conducted all nine Beethoven symphonies in Rome. But the Seventh was always going to be a high point, and so it proves in this live recording: intelligent, intensely beautiful, and burning with an irrepressible life-force.
