Few can say they know the works of Ludwig van Beethoven as well as Daniel Barenboim, but the process of discovering Beethoven is one that never ends for the renowned pianist and conductor. Following a concentrated period of reconnecting both to the instrument and the composer with which his illustrious career began, Barenboim performs Beethoven’s last great works for piano: the Diabelli Variations. Although the monumental 33 variations traverse the entire spectrum of human emotion, Barenboim believes Beethoven was in a state of total isolation from the world when writing his late works. In a rather poignant performance, those emotions resonate even more behind the closed doors of the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin.
