No other guest conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker has led their Europakonzert, held each year in a different European city of culture, as often as Daniel Barenboim. In 1997, the event was watched worldwide from the Palace of Versailles. In keeping with the performance venue, one of the most beautiful buildings of the Baroque era, the concert opens with Maurice Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin, a ravishing tribute to 17th- and 18th-century French music that is as spiritual as it is melancholy. Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 13, in which Barenboim also performs as the soloist, and Beethoven's stirring "Eroica" Symphony complete the programme.
